Every year since 1981 the Minnesota State High School Mathematics League (MSHSML) has offered Minnesota high school math teams five tests at each of five separate meets held at regional sites during the school year. Each test has a fixed curriculum. Regional high scoring teams as well as high scoring individuals are then invited to the state math meet to participate in an additional round of up to seven tests leading to state team and individual champions. One of the founding goals of MSHSML was to prepare Minnesota students for the national American Mathematics Competition (AMC) exam. Like the AMC 10/12 exam, the MSHSML exams cover the entire high school mathematics curriculum excluding calculus.
During my years as a math team coach I put together lengthy study notes for each MSHSML test. It is my hope that making these study notes available will be beneficial to students and their coaches.
Each year the MSHSML sponsors a week-long summer short course through their Summer Mathematics Institute (SMI) program for motivated high school students. The topic varies each year according to interests. The intent is to target the course to a level comparable to intermediate and harder AMC problems. I have been involved with this program in various years and hope these course notes I wrote will be instructive to students at various levels. I believe these course notes could be a particularly useful resource for university students enrolled in teacher training programs.
I am in the process of preparing in depth notes for contest material on probability and number theory. Even though this material is not finished (especially so for number theory) I have decided to upload what I have so you might have these notes available for the first MSHSML exam (which includes number theory). I continue to add to and edit this material so check back frequently.
